Museum of Art

The collection displayed at the Museum of Art 1 and Museum of Art 2 is primarily focused on the art of the 20th and 21st centuries. It’s an exceptional collection as it was created by the artists themselves when they donated their works to the future museum. It should be stressed that the Lodz Museum of Art is one of the oldest museums of modern art in the world. The collection includes paintings of such artists as Fernand Léger, Max Ernst, Leon Chwistek, Tytus Czyżewski, or Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz – representatives of cubism, surrealism, formism, and the stream of the “pure form” (more here)

The core of the collection is formed by the works of the world renowned group “a.r.”, Władysław Strzemiński, Katarzyna Kobro, and Henryk Stażewski. It is thanks to their inspiration that works of many artists have been acquired and the collections formed. Among the names of the authors of the collected works, we should also mention Jankiel Adler, Le Corbusier, Victor Vasarely, Roman Opałka, Mirosław Bałka, Magdalena Abakanowicz, Marc Chagalle, Paul Klee, Tadeusz Kantor, Joseph Beuys, and many, many more.

Currently ms² is presenting the exhibition Atlas of Modernity, which organizes works around the notions commonly associated with what is modern, such as: emancipation, autonomy, industrialization, capital, urbanization, experiment, mechanization or revolution. Thanks to that works presented in ms² are not only an illustration of a particular direction in art but they communicate topics relevant for viewers here and now.

The mission of the Museum is to create conditions enabling the contemporary viewer to communicate with the artistic work of past and present generations and thus to awaken in him/her the ability to see, understand and feel the surrounding reality independently. The Museum promotes art as an essential element of social life capable of making human existence more complete and valuable.
