The first monks settled here as early as 1176, the monastery church is one of the most valuable Romanesque monuments in Poland.

Among the guests of the Abbey, it is worth mentioning Władysław Jagiełło, who visited Sulejów in 1410 on his way to the battle with the Teutonic Knights. According to legend, the damage to one of the columns at the entrance door to the church in the Cistercian monastery, visible to this day, is the result of sharpening swords by the King and his knights.
