It is one of the most recognizable brands of the Łódź Voivodeship. It originates from the area of the former Duchy of Łowicz and its origins date back to the first half of the nineteenth century. When visiting this part of the voivodeship, the colorful handicraft of Łowicz draws attention. It used to be used to decorate cottages, today these motifs appear wherever we want to add color and cheer up the space. The most popular are Lowicz cut-outs: kodra, gwiozdy and ribbons, for which floral motifs, flowers and roosters are used. Also noteworthy are the so-called "spiders" – spacious, richly decorated forms hung under the beams of the room. While the motifs of cut-outs are used in the decoration of modern objects, "Spiders" are only made on special orders.
Going to see the living culture of Łowicz, it is worth visiting the folk museum belonging to the Brzozowski family in Sromów, where cut-outs, spiders and, above all, moving sculptures presenting scenes from the life of the region's inhabitants are exhibited. The manufacturing traditions of the region also include religious sculpture and pottery, which is cultivated to this day. Lowicz folklore is associated primarily with colourful striped costumes. It should be remembered that the well-known Oberek was also formed here, and musical traditions are still alive.
If you want to taste the local folklore, it is worth going to Łowicz on Corpus Christi. On this day, the city is teeming with life. Handicraft stalls appear on the streets and the music of local folk bands resounds. Tradition intertwines with modernity, creating a unique atmosphere.
