Łódź is a very green city, with over 60 city parks and green areas! The first completely free attraction are our green areas. We wouldn't even need a week to visit them all. Here are some of the most interesting green areas worth spending time in:
- Łagiewnicki Forest - one of the largest urban forests in Europe, with an area of over 1,200 ha. This is a remnant of the former Łódź forest, where today you can find numerous hiking and cycling trails ideal for active tourism.
- Źródliska Park - the oldest park in Łódź from 1840, which includes a beautiful bower (where concerts are held), a palm house and a Tubajka café.
- Park Na Zdrowiu - the largest park complex with the largest playground for children, Orientarium ZOO Łódź, Botanical Garden and Aquapark FALA.
- Klepacz Park - it is worth visiting to see the tree of the year 2022 - Fabrykanta Oak, and spring-blooming onions and snowflakes, which create beautiful blue-purple carpets.
- Stefanskiego Ponds - where you can try your hand at water sports in the city wake park.
2. The Łódź Trail of the UNESCO City of Film
A must-see for cinema lovers! Thanks to it, we can learn about the cinematographic heritage of our city, which is included in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in the field of film. There are three different trails:
Would you like to visit the locations where scenes from Oscar films were shot? Or maybe you have always dreamt of seeing the original Oscar statuette? If so, we would like to invite you to our walk in the footsteps of Polish films and characters who competed for the Academy Award.
What trace did the great filmmakers of Polish cinema – Oscar nominees and winners – leave behind in Lodz? Were they graduates of the Łódź Film School? Or were their films made at the legendary Feature Film Studio? Learn about the city’s film history by following their footsteps.
With the TV series walk around Łódź, is the third walk planned as part of the Trail. Do you know which well-known TV series were filmed on the streets of our city?
3. Piotrkowska Street
When in Lodz, you cannot fail to visit the most important symbol of our city, the famous Piotrkowska. A walk along the longest shopping promenade in Poland is, of course, a completely free attraction that will provide us with priceless memories and impressions. On the route there are monuments of the "Gallery of Great People of Lodz" and beautiful tenement houses. While walking along Piotrkowska Street, it is worth visiting revitalized artistic courtyards such as Passage of Rosa or Birth of a Day yard. "Pietryna" is also a place that delights with its rich gastronomic offer of cuisines from all over the world. Therefore, it is worth stopping by one of the establishments on the main street of Lodz.
4. Manufaktura
Manufaktura is one of the city's landmarks, associated with a shopping centre, restaurants and various attractions. Today, the former factory complex also offers us completely free entertainment, such as the possibility of summer recreation on the city beach.
5. Księży Młyn
It is a charming post-industrial estate, created in the 19th century by the richest manufacturer of Łódź, Karol Scheibler, which was a kind of "city within a city". Today, this revitalized area has been given a completely new life and delights both residents and tourists who come here for walks. A number of free events are organized here, such as art workshops and family picnics with free attractions for children.
6. Film Museum
While at Księży Młyn and Źródliska Park, it is also worth visiting the museum dedicated to the history of cinema in Łódź. The best day to visit this institution is, of course, Wednesday. This is the day when we will visit the entire permanent exhibition COMPLETELY FOR FREE! On Wednesday, you can watch the opening of one of the 6 original photo plastics in the world for free and get to know the heritage of the Łódź film industry in one place.
7. Museum of the City of Łódź
Wednesday is also a day of the week when Israel Poznański's Palace, today's seat of the Museum of the City of Łódź, offers free admission. This is an institution where we can both see the breathtaking 19th-century palace interiors where the Poznański family (owners of today's Manufaktura) lived and visit fantastic exhibitions about Łódź. These include the offices of famous Łódź residents (e.g. Artur Rubinstein's office), the Promised Land exchange office, the multicultural exhibition "In a common backyard" but also a modern exhibition as part of the "Łódź in Europe" exhibition. "Europe in Łódź".
8. Central Museum of Textiles
On Wednesday, we also have a free day at the museum in Ludwik Geyer's White Factory, dedicated to the textile industry of our city and the history of Lodz accompanying the development of the textile empire. On the premises of the museum there is a new exhibition CITY - FASHION - MACHINE, which brings us closer to the history of the City of Weavers and the development of the textile industry. It is also worth visiting a free attraction on the factory premises on this day, i.e. the Lodz Urban Culture Park (formerly the Łódź Wooden Architecture Open-Air Museum) with a wonderful exhibition about multicultural Łódź, located in 19th-century houses brought from various parts of our city.
9. Art Museum (ms1, ms2, Herbst Palace)
Every Wednesday it is worth going to three branches of the Museum of Art in Lodz, which offer free admission to all their facilities on that day. MS1 at ul.Więckowskiego is one of the oldest museums of modern art in the world. The core of the collection are works by the world-famous "a.r." group. – Władysław Strzemiński, Katarzyna Kobro and Henryk Stażewski. MS2 will delight us with the "Atlas of Modernity" exhibition, which is an invitation to a journey along the paths that led from the sources of the modern world to the present day. The third branch - the Herbst Palace Museum is the pearl of Lodz palaces with impressive interiors of the villa of a wealthy factory owner's family, a beautiful garden layout and the Gallery of Ancient Art in the renovated coach house.
10. Lodz Murals
Of course, our mural gallery could not be missing from the list of completely free attractions worth visiting in Łódź. Łódź has been called the mural capital of Poland, so it is an ideal free attraction for visitors to our city and all street art lovers. There are currently over 200 examples of murals and street art in the city, both in the very center of Łódź and in other districts. The works on the buildings of our city are the works of both famous Polish and foreign artists. Exploring the city along the mural trail will certainly be easier thanks to the map of Łódź street art!
11. Lodz Fairyland
This is a real treat for both the youngest tourists and their parents, who will take a sentimental journey back to their childhood on the Lodz Fairyland Trail. The trail consists of 10 small monuments depicting heroes of animated fairy tales, created by the SE-MA-FOR studio from Łódź. A walk along the trail is, of course, a free attraction in which we can collect fairy-tale stamps for each hero we visit! Books of Łódź Bajkowa can be obtained for free at the Lodz Tourist Information.
12. The Marek Edelman Dialogue Center
This is one of the points on the map of Lodz that is a COMPLETELY FREE attraction. It is located in the Survivors' Park, where trees were symbolically planted by Holocaust survivors. The mission of the Center is to promote intercultural and interreligious dialogue and present the achievements of various cultures - in particular those known from the history of Łódź. Particular emphasis is placed on Jewish culture, although the exhibitions, panels, workshops and lectures organized by the facility also cover.
13. Radegast Station
This is another place for those interested in the history of Łódź and its difficult fate, which can be visited for free on Wednesday. It is a historic railway building from 1941, associated with the ghetto established during World War II. There is a model of the Lizmannstadt Ghetto on display in the station building. A Tunnel of Memory was built near the station, whose minimalist form reflects the feeling of being overwhelmed by the occupation and the increasingly difficult history of Jews in Łódź.
These are only 13 selected points from Łódź's tourist offer. The city, of course, offers a number of other attractions and events, which you can find out about on our website www.lodz.travel.pl
