Museum of Lodz

One of the most interesting museums in Lodz is located in the magnificent mansion built for the family of one of the wealthiest factory owners of the 19th century Lodz, Izrael K. Poznańki. Apart from the exhibition of its interiors from the turn of the 19th and 20th century and the exhibition chronicling the history of the industrial Lodz, some rooms have been dedicated to artists related to the city and those who were meritorious to the city’s inhabitants, e.g. Artur Rubinstein.

In 2017, the palace’s cellar became the venue of a permanent multicultural exhibition called “On a Common Yard”. The exhibition displays basic knowledge of the city, of pre-1939 Lodz. The multiculturality is manifested through the museum collections, archival photographs, arrangement and scenographic solutions, and audiovisual contents. The multimedia serve as the complement of the interwar narrative. Flashing monitor screens are limited to the minimum, and there is a complete lack of illuminated signs, which is why the colorful tainted glass that seems illuminated by rays of sun is beautifully displayed in the common hall. No less interesting exhibition was opened in 2020 under the title "Łódź in Europe. Europe in Łódź. The promised land yesterday and today'. The exhibition presents the evolution of Łódź over nearly two centuries from four different but complementary perspectives. The most important axis is the history of the metropolis. It is complemented by a story about various aspects of city life, which reveals the network of relationships building the complicated metropolitan machinery. Through historical objects, photographs, tactile models, games, applications and recordings, the exhibition helps to understand Łódź's past, learn about the background of its phenomenal development and discover its potential.

Historic interiors are venues to concerts, vernissages and banquets. The palace two-story gallery is famous for the temporary exhibitions. The institution conducts educational activities for children and youth in the form of workshops, outdoor sessions, and museum classes.

The palace building neighbors Poznański’s revitalized factory complex, Manufaktura. Right next to the palace is the garden. Contemporary artists of Lodz display their open-air sculptures that are part of the Alley of Sculpture embedded in the green spaces of the garden.
